As a Brit, never have I been more invested in, or affected by, American politics as I have been this past week. Like so many others around the world, I’ve been shocked at the result. It has been, and remains, hard to comprehend how a convicted felon could be chosen over a highly intelligent and accomplished woman.
Finding myself on the anti-Trump side of TikTok, it has been heartbreaking to hear the distress of the women, but also many men, who will now have to live under the Trump regime for four years. I’ve seen many preparing to leave the country, and others who desperately wish they had that option.
Trump’s dangerous message
More than anything, I hate the message that Trump’s election gives men and young boys – that success can come without respect, empathy, or accountability. And that qualities like aggression, self-interest, and disregard for others can be rewarded in leadership roles.
This message risks overshadowing the values of integrity, kindness, and collaboration, which are crucial for healthy relationships, communities, and societies. It’s essential that we emphasise that true strength lies in respect for others, ethical responsibility, and the courage to lead with compassion.
Trump and women’s rights
Trump’s treatment of women is also dangerous as it normalises disrespect, objectification, and devaluation of women, reinforcing harmful gender stereotypes and enabling a culture that excuses misogyny and harassment.
In a society valuing freedom and equality, policies that strip away fundamental rights are a step backward, undermining the progress made toward gender equality and bodily autonomy.
Kamala Harris’s concession speech
Turning to the more positive aspects of the election. Kamala Harris’s concession speech, delivered with such grace and decorum, is rich with themes that resonate well beyond the context of the election.
Her speech exudes a spirit of resilience, a commitment to foundational American principles, and an unyielding belief in the possibility of a brighter future. Here are a few additional insights we can take away from her message:
The Power of Gratitude
Harris opens with a message of gratitude, emphasising the trust and support she received from her supporters. In the face of disappointment, she chooses to focus on appreciation, a sentiment that can serve as a grounding force during difficult times.
This emphasis on gratitude speaks to the importance of recognising the good in any situation and acknowledging those who stand by us.
It also highlights the value of community and connection, underscoring the notion that victories and challenges alike are shared experiences that strengthen collective resolve.
Faith in America’s Promise and Resilience
The line, “the light of America’s promise will always burn bright as long as we never give up and as long as we keep fighting,” reinforces Harris’s unwavering faith in America’s potential.
She sees America as a land where dreams are achievable and justice is attainable, as long as we remain committed to these ideals.
By emphasising that America’s promise is tied to the efforts of its people, Harris reminds us that resilience and hope can be powerful agents of change.
This optimism reinforces the idea that while setbacks may come, they do not diminish the country’s potential or the progress we can achieve together.
Embracing Community and Coalitions
Reflecting on her campaign, Harris highlights the effort to build diverse coalitions of people from all backgrounds, “united by love of country.” This focus on coalition-building is a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from unity.
By valuing inclusivity, Harris underscores the importance of looking beyond individual differences and finding common ground. Her words reinforce that successful movements are driven by diverse communities working together, each adding unique perspectives to a collective vision for progress.
Acknowledging Emotional Complexity
Harris acknowledges the range of emotions that accompany a difficult moment, reminding people that it’s natural to feel disappointed. Yet, she encourages people to move forward, to “roll up our sleeves.”
By addressing the complexity of emotions without dismissing them, Harris validates her supporters’ feelings and illustrates a healthy approach to processing disappointment.
This empathetic approach fosters resilience by allowing people to acknowledge their emotions and still find the motivation to continue working toward their goals.
Loyalty to Principles Over Individuals
One of the speech’s key messages is Harris’s dedication to values over personal or political figures. She reminds her audience that loyalty should lie with the Constitution, one’s conscience, and one’s higher values, not with any single leader or party.
This is a reminder that allegiance to principles provides stability and a moral compass, especially during challenging times.
It encourages individuals to prioritise ideals over individuals and maintain integrity in their actions, reinforcing that genuine progress requires commitment to a higher purpose.
The Fight for Rights and Justice
Harris’s emphasis on protecting personal freedoms – especially women’s rights, public safety, and the rule of law – reflects her dedication to justice and equality. She frames these issues as ongoing fights, underscoring that true progress demands perseverance.
Harris’s message speaks to the notion that advocating for social justice and human rights is a long-term commitment, often requiring consistent effort in various arenas, from the courts to personal interactions.
Acts of Kindness and Quiet Strength
Harris’s call to “wage [the fight] in quieter ways” through kindness, respect, and everyday actions is a powerful reminder that change is not solely created through grand gestures.
She encourages everyone to “treat one another with kindness and respect,” viewing even small acts as part of the broader pursuit of justice and dignity.
This notion reflects the idea that each person has a role to play in building a more compassionate society and that progress often begins with how we treat others in our daily lives.
A Message to Young People: Perseverance and Hope
Harris directly addresses young people, urging them to stay engaged and to believe in their potential. Her encouragement to never give up and to keep “making the world a better place” is particularly empowering for the next generation.
Harris’s words remind young people that they have the power to shape the future, even if it requires persistence and patience. This message reinforces the idea that challenges are part of growth, and that each individual’s contribution is valuable.
Hope in Dark Times
Closing with the metaphor of “only when it is dark enough can you see the stars,” Harris evokes a sense of hope and unity. She encourages Americans to become a “billion brilliant stars” lighting up any potential darkness.
This vision is both empowering and comforting, reminding her audience that collective optimism and resilience can help overcome adversity. It’s a call for Americans to come together, hold onto hope, and inspire one another even during challenging times.
A Call to Action and Inspiration
Kamala Harris’s words carry a message of resilience, dedication, and unwavering hope in the face of adversity, which so many of us needed to hear. She reminds us that setbacks are simply moments on a longer journey toward justice, equality, and freedom.
Her speech encourages each of us to look beyond immediate outcomes, trust in our values, and stay engaged in the collective fight for a better future.
By embracing gratitude, unity, kindness, and resilience, we can all contribute to a legacy of optimism and progress, lighting the way forward for ourselves and for generations to come.
Let’s hope her words help carry people through the years to come.
